will host Ithaca's first Food Justice Summit to mobilize locally for food sovereignty and raise funds to support food justice projects, specifically Ithaca Community Harvest and the work of GreenStar to create a system of regional food sustainability that promotes health, equity, and community control of essential resources.
What is Ithaca Community Harvest?
Ithaca Community Harvest is a collaborative effort of a diverse group, representing a number of area farms, local organizations and initiatives concerned with food sovereignty, justice & equity, education, leadership development and personal, community and ecological well-bring. ICH is growing healthy farms and families from the roots up by strengthening cooperation and leveraging locally available resources to meet local needs with a particular focus on engaging and benefiting historically marginalized communities.
Ithaca Community Harvest is a collaborative effort of:
Provides 2 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables (mostly local and organic) to every classroom everyday at BJM Elementary throughout the school year
Gardens4Humanity
Provides garden-based learning for BJM students, and youth in after-school programs at Southside Community Center and GIAC (hands-on activities in the classroom and gardens)
Supports community gardens so families can grow food in their neighborhoods
Trains community volunteers to help in community and school gardens
Healthy Food For All
Provides vegetable and fruit Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares, an abundance of organic farm fresh seasonal produce, at a reduced price every week from June through November for families with limited income
Coordinates nutrition cooking classes with CCE-TC Nutrition, local chefs and farmers for families with limited income
Provides educational resources to help people identify, store and prepare seasonally available produce
Ithaca Crop Mob
Coordinates monthly work days on farms and arranges a "mob" of community members to lend a hand with labor intensive projects to help farms get special projects done and save resources
Market Boxes & Gleaning
Coordinates the exchange of volunteer labor on local farms for "extra" produce for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program at BJM and hot meal programs at both Southside Community Center and GIAC
Coordinates school and after-school educational field trips to local farms to foster a connection to and appreciation for fresh food
Coordinates weekly distributions of Market Boxes with farm fresh produce at BJM, GIAC and Southside Community Center
Whole Community Project
Facilitates dialogue amongst diverse stakeholders to ensure that every single child in Tompkins County has all the healthy food they need and plenty of opportunities for safe, fun and active play.
Youth Farm Project
Provides internships and employment for high-school age teens and young adults to farm at Three Swallows in Danby
Grows food for BJM, GIAC and Southside Community Center snacks and meals, and for the Congo Square Market in the Southside neighborhood and the Northside Farmers Market
Coordinates activities to foster youth development and job training
